#1: Digital ID and Trustworthy AI
Welcome to this first newsletter from our side of the desk in London.
More and more services that we need to work, live, learn, and play, are delivered through technology, from text messages through to AI. But few of us know how these technologies work. No one truly knows how they impact our lives.
Here’s what we’re seeing, thinking and working on in this space.

Digital ID
In the UK, spurred by the formation of a new government, conversations about digital identity are on the rise again.

Our friends at Careful Industries have produced a rapid response study on Digital Identity in the UK. This is a great introduction to the state of play and public attitudes to the UK’s Digital ID plans.
And this article by James O’Malley helps to explain UK Gov’s current stance in some more detail.
We’re working in this space right now, helping an organisation measure the impact of trust on the use and uptake of Digital ID.
Trustworthy AI
From MIT, a growing academic repository of AI risks. This is a good attempt to create a taxonomy of potential harms and we can see this igniting new thinking among practitioners. IF have been working with several clients to mitigate these kinds of risks in their product experiences - from user autonomy through to misuse.

Our Mindful Friction in AI panel
How do we design AI products to be trustworthy? And how should we build mechanisms for taking a second look and applying human judgement? Mindful Friction is part of the answer. We posted some highlights from our recent Mindful Friction in AI event with Salesforce.
Mozilla launched Public AI. They’re calling for an alternative to the current AI landscape through non-commercial public-private partnerships. Here’s their paper on how we can prioritise AI that acts in the public interest.

Our Interim CEO Valeria was at The Conference in Sweden recently talking about Designing for Trust. And our friend Georgina Voss was there too, explaining that Jurassic Park is a good analogy for how we experience systems.
